New Volvo app will boost electric car range

Released as a software update for the XC40 Recharge, Volvo Range Assistant promises to deliver more battery mileage.

Drivers of Volvo electric cars will soon benefit from a new app designed to improve potential range.

Called the Range Assistant, the app forms part of Volvo’s Android-based infotainment system.

It will be offered as an over-the-air software update for relevant models, meaning there is no need to visit a Volvo dealership.

The Range Assistant should give drivers a more accurate picture of how far they can travel with their remaining battery charge.

Real-time energy consumption, along with estimated battery range, will be displayed on the car’s central touchscreen. Information on what is currently affecting range will also be shown.

As part of the app, a ‘range optimiser’ function can adjust the climate control settings. By reducing the power needed for heating or cooling, this should help increase the amount of range remaining.

Volvo is including other battery tweaks in the latest software update. Better smart battery management tools and regeneration performance changes should also help the XC40 Recharge go further.

The Range Assistant app currently being released is an early ‘beta’ development version.

Over time, Volvo plans to update and expand the range of features. These may include coaching tips to help owners learn more economical driving styles.

Roll-out of the new update begins immediately for XC40 Recharge owners, and will continue throughout October. Buyers of the new C40 Recharge will have the app installed at the factory.
