Volkswagen unveils new ID.5 GTX ‘EV SUV coupe’

This is our first look at the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX, a sporty electric SUV with a sleeker roofline than the existing ID.4 GTX.

Volkswagen has unveiled the new ID.5 GTX ahead of its ‘near production’ debut at next month’s Munich motor show.

The model is effectively a coupe version of the ID.4 GTX, shown earlier this year. It reaches dealerships in 2022.

‘GTX’ is Volkswagen’s new nameplate for sporty electric vehicles, complementing the GTI, GTD and GTE ranges in combustion cars.

The ID.5 GTX uses the same powertrain as the ID.4 variant, and Volkswagen says it returns 309 miles of range from its 77kWh battery.

The ID.5 GTX is powered by electric motors that generate 299hp, mated to a four-wheel-drive system. The ID.4 GTX achieves the 0-62mph sprint in 6.4 seconds, so expect a similar figure from this newer car.

Volkswagen added the vehicle will be equipped to receive over-the-air software updates. Car2X technology will also be present, allowing the vehicle to communicate and share information with external systems, including other cars.

Prices for the ID.5 GTX have not yet been confirmed.
