Polestar 3: firm's first EV SUV confirmed

The Polestar 3 will be the firm’s first-ever SUV and sales of the American-built EV are expected to begin in 2022

The Polestar 3, the Swedish EV brand’s first SUV EV, has been given the green light with production set to begin next year in North America.

The firm will make the all-electric SUV alongside Volvo models at the new Ridgeville facility in South Carolina.

Polestar says this confirms its intent to become “a truly global brand” with plants in the US and China alongside its European HQ.

“Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” said CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

“From now on, the USA is no longer an export market but a home market.”

The new Polestar 3 will be based on the next-generation electric vehicle architecture from Volvo Cars. This has been created from the ground up with electrification in mind.

It will boast “industry-leading connectivity” based around Google Automotive OS. Polestar is also promising it will have the latest autonomous driving tech.

While details are still to be announced, they won’t be far in coming: Polestar says the new 3 will begin production globally within the year…
