New BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will offer TWO plug-in hybrids

The second generation of BMW’s compact MPV has been designed for electrified powertrains.

BMW has announced details of its second-generation 2 Series Active Tourer, including electrified options.

The new people carrier will have twice as many plug-in hybrid options as the previous version, with two on offer.

Mild 48-volt hybrid technology will also be fitted across the range, with electrification a key part of the vehicle from the outset.

Completely redesigned inside and out, the new 2 Series Active Tourer has grown in length, height and width. The large front grille includes active air flaps, helping reduce aerodynamic drag for greater efficiency.

The Active Tourer also promises plenty of easily accessible cargo space. Plug-in hybrid versions can carry 1,370 litres with the rear seats folded flat, and have an electric tailgate.

A selection of petrol and diesel engines feature BMW’s latest 48-volt mild hybrid technology. All versions make use of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

A choice of two plug-in hybrids will be offered from 2022. Both use a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine to drive the front wheels, with a compact electric motor for the rear axle.

This results in an impressive combined output of 245hp for the 225e xDrive, while the 230e xDrive musters 326hp. Range on electric power only is 49 miles.

BMW has also increased the maximum charging capacity for the new 2 Series Active Tourer.

The new version will be compatible with 7.4kW chargers, allowing for a full charge in around 2.5 hours. Using a domestic plug socket should take eight hours.

Each 2 Series Active Tourer will be fitted with a 10.25-inch digital dashboard, combined with a 10.7-inch multimedia screen. BMW’s latest Operating System 8 will be fitted, marking the first time it has appeared in a compact model.

An expanded range of driving assistance options includes Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Active Cruise Control and Active Navigation. Cloud-based mapping software provides constant updates on traffic, allowing faster routes to be calculated.

Orders for the new 2 Series Active Tourer can be placed now, with prices from £30,265. Customer deliveries start in March 2022, although plug-in hybrid models will follow later.
