All-new Jeep Grand Cherokee gets 4xe plug-in hybrid option

The fifth generation of the luxurious Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV is available in 375hp PHEV guise.

Jeep has revealed its brand new Grand Cherokee SUV, with a plug-in hybrid version the centre of attention.

The fifth-generation model becomes the first in the Grand Cherokee’s long history to be electrified.

However, Jeep is confident the new Grand Cherokee 4xe will deliver the same off-road ability as its predecessors.

Powering the Grand Cherokee 4xe is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, combined with a pair of electric motors. The standard eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission links the two powertrains.

Total output is a substantial 375hp and 470lb ft of torque, while the 17kWh battery pack allows for up to 25 miles of driving on electric power alone.

Jeep has made the 4xe off-road-ready, with a standard two-speed transfer case, including a dedicated low-range option. It also has the potential to tow up to 2,720kg.

All the high-voltage electrics in the Grand Cherokee are sealed to be fully watertight. This means the 4xe can still ford water up to 6,100mm deep. Special skid plates protect the battery pack from rocks and other off-road hazards.

Drivers can select from three different drive modes, switching between the petrol engine, battery power, or both combined.

Jeep will offer the 4xe plug-in hybrid option across the Grand Cherokee range. Buyers can specify it on multiple trim levels, ranging from Limited, Trailhawk and Overland, to Summit and Summit Reserve.

The ultimate off-road option comes in the form of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe. With a rear electronic limited-slip differential, the Trailhawk managed the fearsome Rubicon Trail on electric power alone.

Although the Grand Cherokee 4xe may be comfortable in the dirt, it features a luxurious interior packed with new technology. This includes up to three digital displays for the dashboard, Amazon Alexa integration, and even a built-in Amazon Fire TV.

Set to be built in Detroit, the new Grand Cherokee 4xe will arrive in North American Jeep dealerships early next year. UK availability will be later in 2022, with prices confirmed closer to launch.
