Hyundai Ioniq 5 misses out on Plug-in Car Grant

Hyundai Ioniq 5 prices to start from £36,995 – just outside the cut-off for the government’s £2,500 Plug-in Car Grant

Hyundai has chosen not to chase the government Plug-in Car Grant with launch versions of its new Ioniq 5 EV: it has confirmed prices will start from £36,995.

That makes it just under £2,000 too expensive to qualify for the £2,500 grant.

This secures customers an Ioniq 5 SE Connect, with a 58kWh battery and rear-wheel drive layout.

Premium and Ultimate grades are also available, while Hyundai’s alternative 73kWh battery is offered in either RWD or AWD guise.

Each Ioniq 5 comes with a one-year subscription to the Ionity charging network, along with the firm’s regular five-year unlimited mileage warranty and an eight-year, 125,000-mile EV battery warranty.

Hyundai UK MD Ashley Andrew said the firm had taken its EV expertise and “combined it with the highest level of progressive design to produce what has already become one of the most desirable models in our history.

“Ioniq 5 doesn’t change the game; it moves our EV offering on to a whole new level."

The regular 58kWh RWD Ioniq 5 has a range of up to 240 miles, while the 73kWh RWD version extends this to 300 miles. Even the AWD version will cover 287 miles between charges.

The Ioniq 5 features 800V charging as standard: find a 350kW ultra-rapid charger – such as an Ionity device – and it will rush to 80% charge in 18 minutes, and give 62 miles of range in five minutes.

Standard on every Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a “naturally-derived” cloth interior, 12.3-inch infotainment, navigation-based smart cruise control, LCD instrument display, wireless smartphone charging, 19-inch alloys and LED lights front and rear.

Premium adds heated seats and steering wheel, dual LED power headlamps, Level 2 Highway Drive Assist and, as an option, a ‘Vehicle 2 Load’ pack… which enables a Hyundai Ioniq 5 to actually charge up another electric vehicle.

Ultimate grade has a 20-inch wheel upgrade, leather interior, solar and privacy glass, Bose premium sound system, head-up display with augmented reality, extra chrome and black gloss detailing outside and, as standard the Vehicle 2 Load pack.

The firm has also confirmed a launch edition called Premium 45.
