The Citroen C5 X will go on sale later in 2021 as the range-topping model in Citroen’s range – and it will be offered in plug-in hybrid EV guise
Citroen has revealed first images of its new range-topping C5 X luxury car, which will go on sale later in 2021.
Said to combine the best of a saloon car, estate and SUV, the C5 X will not be offered with a diesel engine – but will be available in plug-in hybrid EV guise, alongside a standard petrol model.
The bold new model is said to have a lounge-like interior and a new iteration of Citroen Advanced Comfort active suspension delivering a “magic carpet” ride.
“With C5 X, Citroen has created an ambitious, large touring vehicle, a real tool for winning over customers who are increasingly inclined to explore the world,” said Citroen CEO Vincent Cobee.
It is “an audacious and original proposal that truly embodies all of Citroen’s expertise: innovation, care and, above everything, well-being, which we elevate here as a certain form of art of living.”
Unlike many traditional large cars such as the Ford Mondeo and Skoda Superb, Citroen has blended elements from three different types of car in order to boost the appeal of the C5 X.
It has an elevated, SUV-style stance, and runs on large 19-inch wheels. The rear is elongated, like a touring estate car, and the boot opening is large and low.
It’s spacious too, with the 4.8-metre long C5 X promising “outstanding” rear seat space and a boot that expands from 545 litres to 1,640 litres with the rear seats folded.
Special seats deliver “living room” comfort, while the three-mode adaptive suspension that’s standard on PHEV variants “flies over the road” to recreate the classic Citroen ride comfort of its most iconic cars.
The suspension will “overcome all obstacles, potholes, kerbs, speed bumps and other road connections”.
The plug-in hybrid drivetrain produces 225hp and, more importantly, an EV driving range greater than 31 miles. It can even travel at speeds of up to 83mph in pure electric mode.
“With C5 X, we wanted to provide an emotional and rational response to D-segment customers looking for modernity, refinement, comfort and versatility,” said Citroen product and strategy director Laurence Hansen.
“With its unique bodystyle, increased comfort, its plug-in hybrid engine and innovations, C5 X offers pleasure and peace of mind in a true Citroen way.”
