Orders open for flagship Citroen C5 X plug-in hybrid SUV

Citroen’s new range-topping SUV, the C5 X, is available with a 225hp plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Citroen has announced UK prices and specifications for the new C5 X crossover SUV.

Along with a choice of conventional petrol engines, the C5 X is also available with an efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Capable of up to 34 miles on battery power alone, the C5 X Plug-in Hybrid will cost from £35,190.

The design of the C5 X is said to be inspired by classic Citroen models, including the XM and CX. Aerodynamic efficiency has been high on the list of priorities, with the 19-inch wheels wearing low rolling resistance tyres.

All C5 X models benefit from versions of Citroen’s Advanced Comfort Suspension. The Plug-in Hybrid comes with the ‘active’ version.

Hydraulic stops are used to smooth out the ride, with Citroen saying it delivers a ‘magic carpet-like feeling’ on the road.

Compared with the previous C5, the C5 X boasts greater interior space. Rear legroom has been extended by 60mm, with the hybrid able to carry 485 litres of luggage in its boot. Folding the rear seats flat boosts this to 1,580 litres.

At launch, buyers can order the C5 X Hybrid, which combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an 81.2kW electric motor. It makes for a combined output of 225hp, with all models using an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

A 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack offers the potential for an electric range of 34 miles. Drivers can pick between Electric, Hybrid and Sport modes, with the latter offering maximum performance when engaged.

C5 X Hybrids come as standard with a 7.4kW single phase on-board charger, plus a Mode 3 charging cable.

Due to the C5 X Hybrid’s electric ability, official CO2 emissions are just 30g/km. This makes all versions eligible for an 11 percent Benefit in Kind tax rate.

Prices for the C5 X Hybrid start at £35,190 for the Sense Plus model. This includes part-leather seats, a 10-inch multimedia touchscreen, parking sensors and a reversing camera.

The mid-range Shine version, priced from £36,690, adds black Paloma leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and ambient LED lighting for the cabin.

Finally, the Shine Plus will be the range-topping C5 X Hybrid. It comes with privacy glass, heated front seats, a 360-degree reversing camera and a motorised tailgate.

Orders for the C5 X can be placed now, with first deliveries expected in spring 2022.
