Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-Tron revealed

The Audi Q4 E-Tron will be the firm’s first pure electric family-sized compact SUV, sitting below the existing E-Tron and upcoming E-Tron GT performance car

The Audi Q4 E-Tron is Audi’s first family-sized pure EV compact SUV, and opens for ordering later this month with prices from £40,750.

In June, Audi will also open ordering for the more rakeish Q4 Sportback E-Tron.

The two cars will offer two different battery options and three drive configurations, and come in Sport, S line, Edition 1 and Vorsprung trim specs.

Audi says the longest-range Q4 E-Tron can cover 316 miles on a full charge – and the fastest will do 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds.

“The compact SUV has long been the go-to model type for many drivers, said Audi UK director Andrew Doyle.

“I’m delighted that we are now shoring up our already strong position in this vital segment.

“Combining attractive price points, impressive charging performance and the potential to travel in tranquil comfort for well over 300 emission-free miles between stops, the Q4 E-Tron models make the case for switching to sustainable premium mobility more clear-cut than ever.”

Both models boast a distinctive design with short overhangs, large wheels and super-precise body creases. They’re very aerodynamic too – with a drag factor of 0.28 for the Q4 E-Tron and just 0.26 for the Q4 Sportback E-Tron.

Audi says the lower rear spoiler of the Sportback E-Tron not only reduces rear end lift for better, more planted handling – but also boosts the EV driving range by seven miles.

Inside, the dashboard is fully digitised with two screens oriented to the driver. The Audi MMI touch display is packed with app-ready functionality and the sat nav can even display images from Google Earth.

A novel augmented reality (AR) head-up display is also available, which superimposes navigation directions on the ‘real life’ area to which they relate.

The entry-level Q4 35 E-Tron has a battery with a 52kWh net usable capacity, and a single 170hp electric motor. That’s good for a 208-mile range and 0-62mph in 9.0 seconds.

Next up is the Q4 40 e-tron, with a larger 77kWh battery and more powerful 204hp electric motor. Range is 316 miles and 0-62mph dips to 8.5 seconds.

The range-topping version is the Q4 50 e-tron quattro, which combines the same 77kWh battery with two electric motors, one for each axle. This gives all-wheel drive, 299hp and 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds. Audi expects a total driving range of around 295 miles.

Each drivetrain is available on both Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-Tron models.

The larger battery is ready for 125kW rapid charging, giving 80 miles’ range in just 10 minutes – but even the regular battery can fast-charge at up to 100kW.

Other Q4 E-Tron goodies include the availability of premium Sonos audio for the first time on an Audi and, later in the year, the “largest-ever” 11.6-inch MMI display on an Audi.

UK customer cars will arrive in the UK from June – and JustGoEV will be test-driving the new electric Audis ahead of that… watch this space!
