The forthcoming eighth-generation Vauxhall Astra will include an all-electric model, along with a plug-in hybrid version.
With the new eighth-generation Vauxhall Astra set to go on sale next month, several electrified versions have been confirmed.
A plug-in hybrid model will be available from launch – and Vauxhall has also confirmed it will offer a fully electric Astra-e.
This marks the first time in the history of the popular family hatchback that a battery electric version will be sold.
The Astra-e is due for release in 2023, when it will join Vauxhall’s existing Corsa-e, Mokka-e, Combo-e Life and Vivaro-e Life electric range.
Vauxhall has committed to being a fully electrified brand by 2024 (i.e. offering hybrid versions of all its cars), then solely electric from 2028. This is two years ahead of the UK government’s deadline, banning the sale of internal combustion cars.
Two plug-in hybrid models will be offered, with power outputs of 180hp or 225hp. Both make use of an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The plug-in hybrid Astras will be capable of returning between 201.8mpg and 256.8mpg in official WLTP tests. With a 12.4kWh battery, the Astra Hybrid can cover up to 35 miles on electric power only.
Vauxhall will equip all new Astras with a Pure Panel digital cockpit, making use of two 10-inch displays. Extensive safety equipment, ergonomic seats and matrix LED headlights will also feature.
Orders can be placed from October, with the first deliveries expected in early 2022. A Sports Tourer estate follows the hatchback in 2023.
